Lip Surgery Methods, Procedures, Preparation, Recovery and After Care

Transgender Thailand’s partner hospitals perform numerous methods of Lip Surgery, including:

  • Lip Reduction This surgical procedure reduces the volume of a person’s upper or lower lips. This method typically takes an hour to perform under local anesthesia.
  • Lip Surgery with Horn chestnut-shaped lip
This surgical procedure is performed to make a patient’s upper lip chestnut-shaped. This method can improve a patient’s appearance and make them look more youthful. However, whether the Horn chestnut-shaped Lip Surgery can be performed largely depends on the original shape and size of a person’s lips.
  • Lip Surgery by Upper Lip Lift
The Upper Lip Lift is a cosmetic procedure that shortens the space between the nose and the top of a patient’s mouth. This procedure typically involves turning the lip upwards and increasing the visible part of the upper lip to reduce the space.
  • Lip Surgery by Cupid Bow Lip Enhancement
This surgery increases the prominence of a person’s Cupids bow through filler injections or augmentation.
  • Lip Surgery by Philtrum Enhancement
This method improves the prominence of the Philtrum, which is the narrow groove between the nose and the upper lip.
  • Lip Surgery by Lips Enhancement
This procedure is used to adjust the shape of the upper, lower, or both lips to add more volume. Some surgeons inject platelet-rich plasma (PRP) over the span of three months or fillers to achieve the desired result. Both methods do not require surgery, but they are non-permanent.
Lip Surgery

There are two surgical procedures used to enhance the lips, including using the patient’s own skin to create a fuller look or injecting nano fat into the lips.

  • Lip Surgery by Corner Lip Lift
This method is a cosmetic procedure to improve the corners of a downturned lip. A small incision will be made at both sides where the surgeon will remove excess skin.
  • Dimples Surgery
During this procedure, the surgeon will make sutures from one side of the cheek muscle to the other to set the dimples permanently in place.

In modern days, most patients are choosing to forego surgery and experiencing non-invasive options to improve their lip volume. There are two nonsurgical options available for people who want to get rid of fine lines and get plumper lips.

Lip Augmentation via Lip Implant Surgery

Lip implants are a type of permanent lip augmentation that uses synthetic materials to create more symmetrical lips. There are two types of implants that can be used for a more permanent lip:

  • Silicone
  • Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene

While both options produce permanent lip augmentation results, many favor expanded polytetrafluoroethylene implants as it is softer and easier to compress than their silicone counterpart. This makes the lip tissue feel more natural.

In addition to synthetic lip implants, patients can also opt for fat grafting/fat transfer. The fat transfer procedure uses fat taken from the patient’s own body to fill the lip.

Lip Augmentation via Lip Fillers / Lip Injections

This type of lip augmentation procedure requires minimal preparation. There are many types of lip fillers or dermal fillers that can be injected safely into a patient’s lips.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most common type of fillers today. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the human body, making it the perfect tool to increase lip volume, shape, and structure.

Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last around six months. After that, the patient would need to get more hyaluronic acid lip injections to help maintain their plump lips.

Once injected, the gel in the lip fillers easily supports and shapes the tissues of the lips. The surgeon can also easily control the amount of substance injected.

Risks of hyaluronic acid fillers / lip fillers

  • Bleeding from the injection sites
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Reactivation of cold sores of the lips
  • Uneven lips or asymmetrical lips

Who is a good candidate for Lip Surgery?

As people get older, they begin to have decreased collagen production in their skin, which results in a loss of elasticity. This loss may also affect other facial features and lead to hollows in the face or a reduced fullness in the lips.

Lip surgery is an aesthetic plastic surgery performed to help add volume to the lips of many patients and ease their discomfort over the appearance of their mouth. In general, a good candidate for this medical treatment are:

  • Patients who are unsatisfied with their naturally thin lips or lip shape
  • Patients who have realistic expectations
  • People who want to improve their facial proportions or their lower lip
  • Patients who are in relatively good health
  • Non-smokers

Preparing for Lip Augmentation / Lip Enhancement Cosmetic Surgery

Prior to lip augmentation procedures, plastic surgeons are likely to advise their clients on certain steps to take to minimize swelling or bruising following the plastic surgery.

Common recommendations include:

One week prior lip augmentation procedures

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin
  • Avoid herbal supplements

Two days prior to the cosmetic surgery

  • Avoid applying topical products or anti-aging products
  • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing near the area to be treated

One day prior to the plastic surgery

  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages

On the day of the cosmetic surgery

  • The patient should arrive at the office with a clean face. This means no make-up should be applied beforehand
  • In some cases, the surgeon may apply a topical or local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort before they perform lip augmentation

An important thing that patients should remember before lip enhancement procedures is to let the plastic surgeon know whether they are prone to facial cold sores. This is because lip enhancement procedures, which may use needles, could lead to another eruption of cold sores.

Lip Augmentation: What To Do After The Plastic Surgery

Patients who elect to undergo injectable fillers or dermal fillers to get fuller lips can expect the procedure to last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Patients who opt for fat graft or fat injections may spend an hour to an hour and a half at the clinic location for the procedure to be completed. However, the time the procedure takes to complete may vary, depending on the patient’s lips.

An hour after the procedure, the patient may be advised to:

  • Apply an ice pack on the filler injection site to reduce bruising
  • Take pain medication
  • Avoid itching, massaging or picking around the filler injection site

In the next six to ten hours following the treatment, the patient should:

  • Avoid intense heat, such as sunbathing, tanning or hot tubs
  • Take an antihistamine to ease discomfort
  • Massage the area should there be a visible bump. Depending on the product used, the patient should feel the bump soften and settle within a few days to two weeks
  • Use a gentle cleanser around the area

To reduce bruising following the lip implant procedure, the patient should:

  • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverage
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous activities
  • Eat fresh pineapple
  • Apply ice to the lip implant site

To reduce bruising following the lip implant procedure, the patient should:

  • Drinking lots of water
  • Using mouthwash regularly to prevent infections
  • Waiting three days after the surgery before using a toothbrush
  • Avoiding sticky food
  • Talking as little as possible in the month following the surgery
  • Keeping the head elevated to reduce swelling
  • Keeping the lips moisturized
  • Attending all follow-up appointments

Questions To Ask Your Surgeon Before Lip Augmentation Procedure

Dedicated plastic surgeons will take care to answer every question that a patient may pose before and after performing any procedures. They will also provide medical advice that helps shorten the recovery time and ensure a satisfactory result following the surgery. It is often advised for a patient to list the questions on a paper in advance of a lip enhancement consultation.

Some key questions to ask their primary surgeon before any plastic surgery include:

  • Are you a board-certified and qualified medical professional?
  • How many years of experience do you have in cosmetic surgery?
  • Do you have specific experiences with lip augmentation procedures, such as using lip implants and injectable fillers?
  • Are the results I am seeking realistic?
  • What are the limitations of the lip enhancement procedure?
  • Will there be visible scarring?
  • What are my treatment options?
  • Are there any concerns that I should be aware of?
  • How much does lip augmentation cost?
  • Will I have an allergic reaction to the lip fillers?
  • Would I need any pain medication?

Typically, the side effects of a lip filler or lip surgery are temporary and should only last a few days. These may include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising

  • Infections
  • Slow to poor healing
  • Severe or prolonged swelling or bruising lasting to 10 days
