Chin Surgery Methods, Procedures and Recovery Before and After

Chin Reduction surgery, or Genioplasty, is a surgical procedure used to reduce a prominent or over-projected chin. Patients undergoing this type of surgery have the excess bone in the chin removed to achieve a more contoured and defined shape.
Genioplasty can be performed on the patient’s lower jawline or chin area to help improve the proportions of their face. This procedure may involve:

  • Moving the chin forward
  • Pushing it backward
  • Side to side, if the chin is asymmetrical
  • Shortening or elongating the chin

The surgeon will use one of the techniques mentioned above, depending on the patient’s current look and desired goal. TransgenderThailand’s partner hospitals offer three different types of Chin Reduction cosmetic surgery procedures.

Chin Reduction Procedure

Chin Reduction with mandible angle reduction

Chin Reduction with mandible angle reduction is a cosmetic procedure that reduces a patient’s chin, jaw angle, and mandible. During this type of surgery, the surgeon would remove a part of a patient’s chin bone tissue. This helps significantly improve a patient’s lower jawline, chin, and neck.

There are different techniques for this type of procedure:

  • Chin Reduction by resecting the angle of the chin. This technique is recommended when a patient has a small chin but is only concerned about the corner of the chin bone.
  • Chin Reduction by resecting the bone from the chin angle to the middle of the mandible. This technique is the most common method performed in Genioplasty.
  • Chin Reduction by cutting and shortening the chin bone by shaving the lower jaw bone. This technique is performed on patients who have a long chin.
  • Chin Reduction by cutting some bone from the jaw to the chin. This technique improves the lower part of a patient’s face, helping it appear shorter. Surgeons typically perform this procedure on patients with a wide jaw and broad chin.

Chin Reduction with mandible angle reduction

For this type of surgery, the surgeon would slide a patient’s chin bone forward or backward before shaving it, if necessary.

There are different techniques for this type of procedure:

  • Chin forward surgery is performed to make a short chin appear sharper.
  • Chin backward surgery is performed on patients with a long, prominent chin.

Chin Reduction by T-Osteotomy

This is a Genioplasty procedure used by surgeons to help a patient achieve a V-shaped face. This is typically performed on individuals with a short chin and a broad face.

Questions to ask your surgeon before Getting Chin Implants

Board-certified plastic surgeons will take care to answer every question that a patient may pose before and after performing any procedures. It is often advised for a patient to list the questions on a paper in advance of the initial consultation.

Some key questions to ask a specialist plastic surgeon before any surgery include:

  • Are you a board-certified plastic surgeon?
  • How many years of experience do you have in cosmetic surgery?
  • Do you have experience performing chin reduction surgery, chin implants surgery, or operating on a large chin?
  • Are the results I am seeking realistic?
  • What are the limitations of this surgery?
  • Will there be visible scarring?
  • Would I need pain medication during my recovery period?
  • what soft foods can I take after getting chin implants?
